Citizens of Foya District in Lofa County gathered together in a church building to change the course of their nation through constitutional amendments. In this effort thereof, they proposed the following

VAHUN, DISTRICT 2 : SUNDAY, MARCH 16, 2014 So much delight was expressed by the citizens of Vahun District (this once deserted Liberian district due to road access problem) that the CRC thought to include them in the constitution review process. The citizens of Vahun proposed the following constitutional changes: 1. A fair share of districts in national development agenda. 2. The use of one currency as legal tender in Liberia. 3. Reduction in the tenure of elected officials

CRC Consultations take root in the Counties
The Constitution Review Committee is appealing to all citizens of Liberia to get involved in the consultation processes as this is the most important phase of the constitution review process. It is their expectation that citizens of the districts will show enthusiasm and commitment to the change they have been yearning for.

The meeting was basically to orientate Focal Point Persons and Civic Educators on the Constitution and field operations. The Chairperson welcomed the participants and told them that the responsibility given to them is a nationally sensitive one and their performance on the field would reflect the mandate of the CRC.

Statement by Cllr. Gloria Maya Musu-Scott, Chairperson, CRC

Constitution Review is not an ordinary process. it commands the highest degree of  integrity, accountability, legitimacy, transparency, accessibility, openness, and inclusivity. This is the process we have been called upon to drive. This opportunity is a noble one and a once in a while chance to have a say in  he review of the nation’s constitution. Some nations have existed for over Hundred years without a single review. In our case, the 1847 Constitution existed a hundred and thirty three years, without a single review process until it was Overthrown and the 1986 Constitution came into being.

 

Regrettably events of the 1980s and the 1990s which extended to 2003 created Constitutional debates and a need for reforms in our governance structures. As a result, the nation  has been embarking on reforms in many sectors since the birth of post conflict Liberia under the leadership of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. In view of the fact that major reforms such as decentralization and local Governance cannot be achieved without constitutional interventions, the  Imperative to revisit the constitution has never ceased to be a debate and a need.
